A Slice of Paradise

Lake Kaniere is one of the most beautiful lakes in New Zealand and offers opportunity for a number of water sports. There are also several picnic places, a camping area, and numerous short walks.

The Lake Kaniere Scenic Reserve is over 7000 ha, including most of the land from the lake to the top of the peaks which surround it. The lake is surrounded by native bush except for two cleared areas of farmland on the eastern shore. Lake Kaniere is 8 km long, 2 km wide and as deep 195 m in places.

Camp at Hans Bay

Right beside this beautiful lake you'll find the Hans Bay Campsite. Bring a tent or caravan and stay a night or two at this spectacular secluded location. Water and flushing toilets on site, as well as some swings for the kids to play on.

Lake Kaniere offers some incredible surrounding views and sites to explore. Canoeing or swimming (if you're a strong swimmer) a few hundred metres out to the islands in the centre of the lake can be a lot of fun to go and explore.

Dorothy Falls

About 3.5km from the campsite, adjacent to the road on the eastern side of Lake Kaniere, a minute walk from the carpark leads you to the base of Dorothy Falls, a lovely spot for a cold dip on a hot day or great selfie opportunity. If you are staying at the Lake Kaniere Campsite Dorothy Falls is a must to check out.

Kahikatea Forest Walk

From the Sunny Bight picnic area this is an easy 10 minute loop walk. The walk follows Sunny Bight Creek and passes through virgin Kahikatea forest before returning to the picnic area via a boardwalk over a flax swamp.
